Tony Curtis, father of actress Jamie Lee Curtis and 1950s movie heartthrob, has died. He was 85.

The acclaimed star of "Some Like It Hot" died Wednesday night (Sept. 29) in his Henderson, Nev., hom of a cardiac arrest.  

Curtis began his film career with films such as "Son of Ali Baba" and "Houdini." It wasn't until he starred in 1957's "Sweet Smell of Success," in which he plays an unscrupulous and sleazy press agent, that he started getting cast in more substantial roles.

A year later, he received an Oscar nomination for his role in "The Defiant Ones." The film paired him with Sidney Poitier as escaped convicts handcuffed to each other.

Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" is seen as one of Hollywood's funniest films. In it, he and Jack Lemmon masquerade as women to hide out in an all-girl band, which includes Marilyn Monroe, after witnessing a mob hit.

Other highlights of his resume include "Spartacus" and "The Great Race."

Curtis' life was also marked by drug and alcohol abuse.

He was also married multiple times. His and his first wife, Janet Leigh of "Psycho," are the parents to Jamie Lee Curtis and daughter Kelly Curtis.

Curtis has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a mural of Curtis greets drivers heading southbound on Highway 101 southbound at the Sunset Blvd. exit.

He appeared in such films as Sweet Smell of Success and Some Like It Hot. He earned an Oscar nod for 1958's The Defiant Ones.

After retiring from film and battling drug and alcohol abuse, he turned to painting (some of his canvasses sold for as much as $20,000) later in his life.

"I'm not ready to settle down like an elderly Jewish gentleman, sitting on a bench and leaning on a cane," he said at 60. "I've got a helluva lot of living to do."

Film actor Tony Curtis, the father of Jamie Lee Curtis, died of cardiac arrest at his Las Vegas home on September 29, 2010.  He suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had been hospitalized in July after suffering an asthma attack.  He was 85.

He appeared in over 100 films and was best known for his roles in Some Like It Hot and The Defiant Ones. His played a rumba dancer in his debut film Criss Cross in 1949 following a stint in the Navy during World War II.

Tony made painting his second career beginning in the early 1980’s.  In his later years his work was commanding more than $25,000 per canvas.  He gravitated to a surrealist style.  His painting The Red Table was on display in the Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan in 2007 – see photo below.

Curtis, married six times, had been confined to a wheel chair in recent years.   He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Jill Vandenberg Curtis, 43, two daughters from his union to actress Janet Lee, and one child from his marriage to Leslie Allen.  A son, Nicholas Curtis, died of a heroin overdose at age 23 in 1993.

Australian Samantha Stosur has beaten 12th seed Russian Elena Dementieva 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7-2) in a gruelling encounter to book a place in the US Open quarter-finals. Notably, the match started at 10.57pm local time and finished at 1.37am, thus covering two evenings at the US Open for the first time.

Only eight ladies are going to remain standing going into Tuesday’s quarterfinals of the US Open, and two of them will square off in tennis betting action in one of the best matches of the tournament to date, as Kim Clijsters clashes with Samantha Stosur.

Clijsters has been a dominant force in this tournament and is deservedly the favorite to move on to the semis. She has yet to drop a set in the US Open and seems to get stronger and stronger with each passing match. Save a 7-5 set against Greta Arn, Clijsters has only lost eight total games the rest of the tournament. She just dumped Ana Ivanovic with ease at 6-2, 6-1 to move on to the quarters, where she will once again face a very, very difficult test in the form of an up and comer who is due to really shine in one of these major tournaments.

The Aussie certainly has not had the easiest road to reach the quarterfinals of this event, as she has already had two three set matches. The most recent came against Russian Elena Dementieva. Stosur took the first set 6-3, but ultimately dropped the second set with a thud at 2-6. The third set needed a tiebreaker, and that’s where Stosur shined. She made it through by winning the decisive set 7-6 (7-2). Stosur had a real problem trying to deal with Dementieva’s first service point, only picking up the score on 25 percent of her 96 points. She committed a whopping 58 unforced errors as well, something that clearly will not fly against the Belgian.

Entering this event seems to be good enough for Clijsters to figure out how to win it. She has only played here twice since ’05, but won both in 2005 and 2009. The Belgian was also a force in 2003, her previous entry, where she finished as the runner up in the event. Stosur might be ready to break out of her shell, but Clijsters is just playing too well to be beaten here. It has been another great run in a major for the Aussie, but she’ll be heading back home in straight sets on Tuesday.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters has increased her US Open winning streak to 19 matches by beating Sam Stosur in 3 sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

The No. 2-seeded Clijsters will face No. 3 Venus Williams in the semifinals, a matchup between two women who both have won two titles at Flushing Meadows.

Clijsters and the fifth-seeded Stosur, the runner-up at this year’s French Open, had trouble serving in windy conditions Tuesday night. There were a total of 18 service breaks, including a stretch in which there were nine in a span of 10 games.

But Clijsters managed to hold in each of her last two service games.

The Belgian won the US Open the last two times she entered, in 2005 and – after taking off 2 1/2 years to get married and have a baby – in 2009.

“Bootyism” Banner For Tiger Woods – Tiger Woods is back on the golf course and he’s getting heckled more than just someone occasionally yelling something in the background. Instead, people are being more creative – they are using planes and banners to take jabs at the pro golfer.

Tiger Woods was probably feeling a little better now that he is on the golf course playing in the Masters today. Of course, there was a large crowd, like expected, and with that there was even more security. Apparently, there wasn’t enough security as planes with banners caught a lot of attention from just about everybody.

The first banner that flew by read: “TIGER: DID YOU MEAN BOOTYISM?” This is in reference to Tiger Woods promising to return to his Buddhist ways and that he had drifted away from it for quite sometime.

But if you thought that was the last banner, well, you’re wrong… shortly after the “Bootyism” banner, another one flew by. This one read: “SEX ADDICT? YEAH. RIGHT. SURE. ME TOO!”

I guess it’s going to take quite sometime for Tiger Woods to get back into the non-scandal life. Though, I doubt that will happen any time soon, if ever.

Anyways, “Bootyism” is defined as a religion originating in the east(coast) encouraging the endowment of large quantities of (female) booty, getting booty, banging booty, etc. or Bootyism is a sexy religion often confused with Buddhism according to the Urban Dictionary.

Game Boy Inducted Into Hall Of Fame For Toys

In a move sure to make a lot of Generation Xers feel old, not to mention their boomer predecessors, Nintendo’s Game Boy has been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.

The Hall is part of the National Museum of Play in Rochester, N.Y., and features items that have “inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period,” the museum explains.

Forty-four items now are ensconced in the Hall of Fame, including the stick, the skateboard, the kite, jigsaw puzzle, jump rope and G.I. Joe. This year’s inductees, besides Game Boy, were the ball and the Big Wheel tricycle, beating out nine other finalists such as the paper airplane, playing cards and Cabbage Patch Kids.

So, how did Game Boy rate a nod in the same breath as a ball (an item Game Guy thinks should have made it in about 43 inductees ago)? According to the museum’s announcement, the Game Boy “transformed the electronic games market by popularizing handheld gaming.”

“No video game platform did more to put gamers ‘on the go’ than this invention,” the museum said. “Over the past two decades, Game Boy has become synonymous with handheld gaming fun” because of its portability and efficient design.

Of course, you could say the same thing about any ball.

Game Boy, introduced commercially in America in 1989, becomes the second tech gadget to win induction into the Hall (unless you count the Easy-Bake Oven). The Atari 2600 second-generation game platform was admitted to the Hall in 2007.
